Controversial YouTuber and author Lindsay Ellis has announced today that she is quitting social media due to online criticism. She started her career in 2008 as part of the Channel Awesome production company under the name The Nostalgia Chick. She quit Channel Awesome in 2014 to concentrate on creating long-form video essays. Ellis was known for making videos related to Disney and Transformers movies, as well as video essays revealing the truth behind the film industry. According to Ellis, her favorite topics are “things that are deeply flawed but have this really interesting potential.”She published her debut science fiction novel, Axiom’s End, in July 2020, where it quickly became a New York Times Best Seller. Lindsay Ellis Has Become A Controversial Online FigureThroughout her career, the star has been targeted by online harassment, which led to her quitting YouTube and Twitter. On December 28, 2021, Lindsay Ellis shared a Patreon blog post titled “Walking away from Omelas”, breaking the news of her retirement to her fans. Ellis’ career was impacted by a Tweet posting in March regarding Disney’s Raya And The Last Dragon. The film writer and essayist compared the animated film to Avatar: The Last Airbender. She quickly apologized, explaining that she didn’t mean to imply that “all Asian-inspired properties are the same”. The two now-deleted tweets triggered a wave of criticism, with many people upset that the tweet implied Avatar was the starting point of stories inspired by Eastern cultures. In a Patreon blog post announcing her retreat from public life, Lindsay explained: “I know now that being in the public eye at all is a losing game, and I regret all of it.”It’s all hollow and brittle, and if there is one thing I’ve learned this year it is how eminently expendable I am.”Many of her fans have expressed their sadness as they feel the writer has been pushed off the internet by trolls and bullies. Others feel that Ellis’ deserved to be shamed for her problematic behavior and tone-deaf commentary on race and gender. She is just one of the many internet famous critics who have addressed trolls over their career.
