2021’s Malignant is a new HBO Max horror movie from James Wan, the director behind Aquaman and the Conjuring franchise. And it’s simply so competently terrible at horror that it challenges the likes of The Curse of La Llorona for the spot as the worst modern horror movie — which isn’t very good if you’ve seen my video on it (Curse of La Llorona — Making the Worst Horror Film of All Time). But strangely enough, being terrible at horror to the point of being funny might’ve actually been the entire point of Malignant from the start. So today let’s use the opportunity and identify a few key pitfalls in Malignant that you wanna avoid when making a horror movie that audiences can actually fear more than laugh at.
