Despite a six-week break from Premier League (PL) football, Leeds may still be reeling from their last league outing, as a 4-3 defeat to Tottenham saw them become the first team to lead three times in a PL game and fail to win since Boxing Day 2012! Manager Jesse Marsch must now rally the troops ahead of a clash against the reigning PL champions Manchester City, with his side firmly in another relegation dogfight.
Despite indifferent results, Leeds have certainly provided the entertainment factor recently, with their last four PL contests (W2, L2) averaging a whopping 5.5 goals-per-game. Marsch may opt for more defensive stability this time around though, with Leeds managing just two clean sheets across their last 19 PL home outings (W5, D5, L9) – a potentially worrying sign against a City side that have scored in all but one of their last 23 league games.
After a shock 2-1 home defeat to Brentford before the World Cup, City returned to competitive action with a 3-2 Carabao Cup win over fierce rivals Liverpool. It’s Arsenal who currently pose the biggest threat to City’s crown however, and with Pep Guardiola’s side trailing the Gunners by five points at the summit, City have their work cut-out to close that gap.
Despite 13 of the last 18 teams to top the table at Christmas going on to become PL winners (72%), Pep Guardiola has masterminded the last two fightbacks, with Opta’s supercomputer still giving his side a 74.8% chance of becoming champions prior to this round of fixtures. Considering the Cityzens have lost just one of their last 24 PL away games (W17, D6) alongside completing an emphatic double over Leeds last season (4-0 and 7-0), few will expect them to falter here.
Key battle: Leeds ‘keeper Illan Meslier will be wary of City’s Kevin De Bruyne who scored twice against him last season in that 7-0 drubbing, part of a whopping 13 goals he has conceded in four H2Hs against City. De Bruyne once again showed his selflessness last time out, taking his assist tally to 14 across all competitions this season – more than any other PL player.
Hot stat: Guardiola averages the most goals per game (2.5) of all managers to have taken charge of more than 50 PL contests! #MANCITY #LEEDS #PREMIERLEAGUE
